THE HISTORY

The name “PLATES,” refers to both a literal collection of plates Chef Matt has collected during his international travels, and the diverse culinary experience he wishes to reflect in his food. From Lucas Carton in Paris and Boschendahl Vineyard in South Africa, from Bouley in Tribeca and Matteos Pizzeria in Naples, Matt has accrued these dishes from restaurants he has trained in, worked in, or been inspired by.


THE CHEF

(MATT “PLATES” KARP)

Starting in his mother’s kitchen and continuing on to some of the world’s most acclaimed restaurants, Chef Matt Karp has dedicated most of his life to food. With his nose always in a cookbook and his hands elbow deep in flour, it has always been about “the next meal”. He has looped from Scarsdale cooking as a kid, to the China Institute at 14 for Peking Duck lessons, on to internships in Manhattan Restaurants, and refining with a Masters in Culinary Arts from the Cordon Bleu in Paris. He has worked for Star Chefs and learned from Italian grandmothers. He has stretched the mozzarella on the Amalfi Coast and picked the vineyards in France.

After operating PLATES restaurant for 15 years, PLATES CATERING is the continuation and culmination of Matt’s diverse culinary training, experiences, and passion for all things cuisine. Ultimately, he seeks to put good food on a plate, whether simple or elaborate, and loves it when those at the table enjoy. Matt hopes PLATES can be part of your next special occasion.
